PART 2 — THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

—Lower your voice. Maya is resting.

Chloe glanced briefly at the bed.

—How dramatic you are.

I felt a rage that I could barely contain.

—Go out into the hallway.

Once outside, Chloe crossed her arms.

—Mom says you canceled all the payments.

-That's how it is.

—You're ruining our family!

I looked directly at her.

—No, Chloe. I simply stopped funding it.

Her smile disappeared.

—You can't do that.

—I just did it.

Chloe approached.

—You don't know who you're messing with.

I watched her in silence.

—Is it a threat?

His expression changed.

—I'm just saying that some decisions have consequences.

Then he made a mistake.

—Especially when you have a company that depends on hospital contracts.

I felt a chill.

I had never told him that my company developed software for hospitals.

—How do you know that?

Chloe paled.

—You mentioned it once.

I shook my head slowly.

—No. I never did.

For the first time, my sister seemed genuinely scared.
