PART 2 — THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

The rejected charge was for $28,500.

Twenty-eight thousand five hundred dollars for a party while my daughter struggled to regain the use of her legs.

For a few seconds, I stared at the screen.

Then I closed the computer.

I didn't feel guilty.

I felt a tranquility that I hadn't known for years.

At eight seventeen, my phone started ringing.

Chloe.

I let it ring.

He called again.

Then a message arrived.

"What did you do? The organizer says they refused the payment. There are important guests here!"

I replied with a single sentence:

"My daughter is in surgery. Sort your own party."

Five minutes later my father called.

—Elena! Your sister is crying in front of her teachers!

I looked at the operating room doors.

The red light was still on.

—Dad, Maya is fighting for her life.

—We already know! But you can't embarrass the family over a whim.

I felt like something inside me had just broken.

—A whim?
