The question Rachel couldn’t answer
I folded my hands.
“Rachel, how long have you known Tyler?”
She tilted her head.
“Almost a year.”
“Where did you meet?”
“At work.”
Tyler quickly added, “Rachel works in my office.”
I nodded.
“And how long have you been employed there?”
“Over a year.”
I looked directly at her.
“When did you first hear about my father’s inheritance?”
Rachel’s smile weakened.
“What?”
“My inheritance. The money used to buy this house.”
She shifted in her chair.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I leaned forward.
“Tyler mentioned it at company gatherings. He complained that the house was in my name.”
Tyler’s face changed.
I continued.
“He used to say he should have had more control over the money.”
Rachel looked toward him.
I watched the hesitation in her expression.
Then I asked another question.
“Did you know the house was fully paid off before you began your relationship with Tyler?”
