Martin looked twenty years older than he had at Christmas.
“Anna, I’m not here on David’s behalf.”
“Then why are you here?”
“For the firm.”
He placed a folder on the table.
“David used our firm’s name last night.”
“For what?”
“After you were taken to the hospital, he called several people.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“A local official. A doctor. And two partners.”
“What did he want?”
Martin hesitated before answering.
“For them to describe what happened as a domestic crisis brought on by your alleged emotional state.”
I felt cold.
David had done exactly what he had threatened.
—And you?
—We refuse.
-All?
Martin did not respond.
My lawyer leaned forward.
—Mr. Cole, what are you omitting?
Martin opened the folder.
—One of our partners did not refuse.
The name was on the first page.
CHARLES MILLER.
David's father.
My father-in-law.
I had never been told that Charles still had a real stake in the firm.
