PART 2: WHEN MY FATHER ANSWERED, DAVID STOPPED LAUGHING—This is David Miller, Anna's husband. Your daughter is throwing a tantrum…

-No.

It surprised me.

-Because?

—Because this shouldn't turn into "the Chief Justice against your husband."

He leaned down and kissed my forehead.

—I am your father. But the appropriate authorities will do their job without my instructions.

That was exactly what David would never have understood.

Power did not mean being able to do anything.

It also meant knowing when not to intervene.

I told everything.

Dinner.

The insults.

The fall.

The broken telephone.

David's refusal to ask for help.

The threats.

When I finished, the detective closed her notebook.

—Were there any witnesses?

—More than twenty people.

—Cameras? I thought.

—David has indoor cameras.

She looked up.

“Where?”

“The entryway, dining room, hallway, and kitchen.”

The detective’s expression changed.

David had installed those cameras because he didn’t trust the household staff.

Now, they could turn into the very evidence he feared most.

The next morning, Martin Cole asked to see me.

I wasn’t alone.

My lawyer was present.
