PART 2: THE LIE THAT STOLE FOURTEEN YEARS

Leonardo stared at him.

—Uncle Charles?

Charles Lancaster ignored him.

He looked at me.

Then at Ethan.

Caleb.

Adrian.

His cane nearly slipped from his hand.

—My God.

He approached slowly.

—There are three of them.

Leonardo stepped in front of him.

—You know something.

Charles looked at Victoria.

—You never told him?

Victoria whispered:

—Don’t.

—Fourteen years, Victoria.

—Charles.

—Enough.

He turned toward me.

—Sofia, there is something you need to understand about the Lancaster fortune.

I shook my head.

—I don’t want the money.

—This isn’t about what you want.

He looked toward my sons.

—And Leonardo isn’t the only Lancaster whose inheritance is involved.

Nobody moved.

Charles opened his briefcase and removed a yellowed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not Sofia Bennett.

Sofia Lancaster.

I stopped breathing.

Leonardo saw it.

So did the boys.

—Why does that envelope have his last name attached to mine?

Charles looked at Victoria one final time.
