My grandmother spent three days making my brother’s wedding cake, only for his bride, Ashley, to laugh when Grandma asked for the promised payment. Grandma needed that money for medication, so I decided to teach Ashley a lesson she’d never forget.
Grandma is 73, and baking has always been her way of showing love. When my brother Daniel’s fiancée asked her to make a four-tier wedding cake decorated with handmade sugar flowers, Grandma was thrilled.
Ashley had complained that professional bakeries charged over $1,000. She promised to pay for the ingredients and Grandma’s time, and I heard her make that promise myself.
Grandma lived on a small pension, but she bought all the supplies and spent three days baking and decorating. When I visited her, delicate sugar flowers covered the kitchen table. She rubbed her aching wrist as she carefully placed another rose on the cake.
“It’s beautiful, Grandma,” I told her.
She smiled and returned to work.
