The next morning, I stayed with her so I could drive her to the wedding venue. Ashley arrived to collect the cake, inspecting it with her phone without offering a single compliment.
Grandma approached her nervously.
“Honey, could you pay for the cake now? I spent quite a bit on the ingredients, and I need to buy my medication soon. Every dollar matters.”
Ashley laughed in her face.
“Why should I pay? We’re family. Can’t you do this for free?”
Grandma blinked in disbelief. She explained that she loved helping her family but hadn’t expected to cover the cost of such an expensive cake herself.
“Stop acting poor,” Ashley snapped. “I’m not paying. I already have enough expenses.”
I stepped forward, reminding Ashley that she’d explicitly promised to pay. But she rolled her eyes and dismissed me.
Moments later, the men she’d brought to transport the cake carried it away without another word.
I wanted to drive straight to the venue and take it back, but Grandma stopped me.
