He’d barely paid attention at the time.
Now I wondered whether he remembered any of it.
I took out my phone.
Then called my older sister, Margaret.
She answered on the second ring.
“Deb?”
“Margaret, I need you to come over.”
Her voice changed.
“What happened?”
“Remember what I asked you to look into a few months ago?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“Bring everything you’ve found. And any information you have about the property documents.”
Margaret was silent for a moment.
Then she said quietly, “So you finally know.”
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.”
“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
What my sister already suspected
Margaret arrived exactly twenty minutes later.
She carried a large canvas bag filled with folders.
The moment she saw my face, she understood that something serious had happened.
We sat at the kitchen table.
I told her everything.
The perfume.
The strange expenses.
The woman at the door.
And the astonishing demand that I move out of my own house.
