“Is there another woman?” I asked.
“No.”
“Are you having an affair with my sister?”
“No!”
His answer came so quickly that I believed him.
But I still didn’t understand.
“Then what are you hiding?”
Eliam rubbed his hands together.
“Vanessa came to me last week because she was frightened. She told me something had happened, and she didn’t know how to tell you.”
“What happened?”
He looked at me.
“It’s not my secret to tell.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So you decided to lie to me every morning instead?”
“I know how it looks.”
“You have no idea how it looks!”
My voice broke.
“For five days, I watched you leave this house pretending to go to work. I worried that you were cheating on me, that you’d lost your job, that our entire marriage had been a lie. And all this time, you knew something was wrong.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.
