When he entered, he stopped immediately.
He could see something was wrong.
“What’s happened?”
I stood up.
“Where have you been going every morning?”
He didn’t answer.
“Eliam, look at me.”
He slowly put down his keys.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
He glanced toward the stairs.
“Can we talk somewhere private?”
“No. We can talk right here. In the house where we live. In the marriage we supposedly share.”
He flinched.
I had never spoken to him that way before.
“Who is Vanessa?” I asked.
He stared at me.
“What?”
“I saw you together. Twice. I followed you to that building. I heard you say you couldn’t keep doing this behind my back.”
His face went pale.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he sat down heavily on the sofa.
“I’m sorry.”
Those two words made my eyes fill with tears.
Not because they comforted me.
Because they confirmed that there was something to apologize for.
