My 74-year-old father invited me to dinner and offered me a drink. I accepted, but the next morning I woke up feeling terribly ill and went to the hospital. When the doctor saw my blood test results, his expression suddenly changed. He asked, “Have you suspected lately that you might be pregnant?”

Silence.

The kitchen table was still covered with our dinner plates.

The two glasses were still next to the empty pitcher.

Then I saw something that made my stomach churn.

My father had placed our photograph in a small frame next to the picture of my mother.

Below was a handwritten note.

"Whatever happens, don't let Sarah have to face it alone."

I collapsed into a chair.

Who was that message for?

And what did my father already know?

Just then my phone rang.

It was Dr. Wilson.

—Sarah, we need you to return to the hospital. We have additional information and I would prefer to explain it to you in person.

My voice was trembling.

Am I seriously ill?

—We don't know yet. Please don't jump to conclusions. But this result requires immediate follow-up.

I drove back through tears.

By the time I arrived at the hospital, I had already imagined every possible nightmare.

But I wasn't prepared to meet the person waiting outside the examination room.
