Karen nodded.
That evening, she told me what they had discovered.
We sat in the reading corner of Second Chapter after closing time.
“Part of me wants to call him right now,” she admitted. “I want to ask him how he could look me in the eye for all those years and pretend nothing was wrong.”
I took her hand.
“You deserve answers.”
“But what if I never get them?”
I considered the question.
“Then you’ll have to decide how to move forward without the answers you hoped for.”
She looked at me.
“That’s a terrible answer.”
“I know.”
She leaned against my shoulder.
“I’m beginning to understand why people write so many books about heartbreak.”
“Because nobody has figured out how to make it simple?”
“Exactly.”
We sat together in silence.
Then she lifted her head.
“Alex, promise me something.”
“What?”
“If Michael tries to turn this into a fight between you and Daniel, don’t let him.”
