“What is going on?” I whispered. “Why did your father tell me I would never see you again?”
David stepped forward and placed a set of keys in my trembling hand.
“Because, Mom, after today, you won’t have to miss us anymore.”
I stared at him.
He pointed toward the house.
“This is your home.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Then Emily took my other hand.
“Dad and we have been planning this for almost a year. We wanted to surprise you both.”
I looked at Robert, completely bewildered.
He finally smiled.
“Mary, I didn’t finish the sentence.”
I narrowed my eyes at him.
He stepped closer and gently took my hand.
“What I meant was… after today, you’ll never have to see your children only through a phone screen again.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Our children explained everything.
Over the years, work, marriages, and family responsibilities had caused them to move farther and farther apart. We mostly saw them on holidays, and sometimes months passed when all we had were phone calls and video chats.
