Outside the terminal, he stopped beside a waiting car.
“Are we going to a hotel?” I asked.
“No.”
“Then where are we going?”
He opened the passenger door.
“You’ll see in a few minutes.”
I almost turned around and went back inside.
But I followed him into the car.
We drove through unfamiliar streets, past shops, parks, and quiet residential neighborhoods.
Finally, the car stopped in front of a beautiful white house with a garden and a wide front porch.
Three cars were parked outside.
I recognized two of them immediately.
David’s.
And Emily’s.
My heart began pounding.
“Robert… why are our children here?”
He didn’t answer.
The front door suddenly opened.
My granddaughter came running down the steps.
“GRANDMA!”
Behind her came all three of our children, followed by their spouses and the rest of our grandchildren.
I stood frozen on the sidewalk.
Emily rushed toward me and wrapped her arms around my shoulders.
“Mom, please don’t be angry that we didn’t tell you.”
