Daniel approached the four-tier cake and studied the delicate ivory layers and sugar roses Grandma had spent days creating.
Then he plunged the spoon into the center, scooped out a huge portion, and ate it.
The entire room fell silent.
“Daniel!” Ashley screamed. “What are you doing?”
He ignored her and called across the hall.
“Grandma, this is wonderful!”
Grandma stared at him in disbelief as he crossed the room and knelt beside her chair. He took both her hands, his voice breaking.
“Thank you for all the hours you put into this. I’m so sorry for how Ashley treated you.”
Grandma blinked back tears.
“Please don’t be upset, sweetheart. It’s your wedding day. I never wanted…”
“You did nothing wrong,” he told her firmly. “Nothing.”
Then Daniel took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry I didn’t discover what kind of person Ashley was before I married her. It’s going to be a mess to undo this.”
