“Oh, Emily. Please tell me you didn’t.”
“What does that mean?” Emily demanded.
“I tried to warn you.”
“Don’t start.”
“I still have the messages.”
Maya explained she’d participated in a student group chat where Emily’s photograph circulated.
Initially, Ryan defended his girlfriend. But when friends mocked him for dating her, his behavior changed.
“He started laughing along,” Maya said. “Then he started making jokes himself.”
“You’re lying,” Emily whispered.
Maya forwarded screenshots.
The earliest showed Ryan telling someone to stop being cruel.
In a later exchange, another student shared Emily’s photograph. Ryan joked about her chin, prompting laughing reactions.
Then Ryan wrote, “Don’t worry. She’s working on fixing that.”
The boyfriend Emily trusted had participated in her humiliation.
“That’s not what he meant,” she whispered.
Yet she couldn’t explain his words.
Maya said she’d confronted him, but he’d dismissed everything as harmless humor and accused her of interfering.
