“Because of his courage, my brother lived to return home to his daughters,” Thomas said. “Sergeant Vance sacrificed his own leg during that rescue and embodies the highest traditions of American service.”

“He is traveling with his daughter Maya today to honor his late wife’s memory,” Thomas concluded. “Sergeant Vance, on behalf of our entire flight crew and airline, we thank you for your service and sacrifice.”

the cabin erupted into thunderous applause. Passengers stood up from their seats throughout the aircraft, clapping and cheering, some wiping tears from their faces as they looked at our row.

The businessman at the rear of first class also stood and clapped remorsefully. He met my gaze, nodded an apology, and touched his heart.

In the bright terminal, a kind-faced sandy-blonde woman approached with coastal lilies. She smiled at Thomas beside us.
