David:
“She’s seven months pregnant. I’m not going to pressure her today.”
Sylvia:
“Then make her feel alone enough to understand that she has no alternative.”
My throat closed up.
But the next sentence was worse.
David had replied:
“My father said that Robert Bennett still doesn’t know that Anna found the second will.”
I looked at my father.
He had gone pale.
—What second will?
For the first time since he arrived at the hospital, my father could not meet my gaze.
-Dad.
He got up slowly.
—Anna, there's something about your mother that I never told you.
My mother had died when I was eight years old.
—What does Mom have to do with this?
My father opened the briefcase he was carrying.
He took out an old envelope.
My name was written on the front.
—Your mother left this for you.
—Why did you never give it to me?
—Because he disappeared after his death.
