PART 2: I LET MY FAMILY BELIEVE I WAS STILL THE SAME MAN… THEN I REVEALED THE TRAP I HAD BEEN PREPARING

I didn’t pull out my phone to call the police.

Not yet.

I didn’t pull out my phone to scream at my mother.

Not yet.

I simply unlocked the screen and opened the one message I had been waiting for.

Then I turned the phone around.

“Theresa.”

My mother looked at me suspiciously.

“What?”

I held the phone up.

“Do you remember the money I sent every month?”

Her face changed slightly.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Everything.”

I tapped the screen.

A bank statement appeared.

Not just one.

Dozens.

Months of transfers.

Four years of deposits.

Every payment I had made from Canada.

Every dollar I had sent with the belief that it was protecting my wife.

The backyard became silent.

“I didn’t send you money to buy a new SUV.”

My mother looked away.

“I didn’t send you money to renovate the kitchen.”

Brianna crossed her arms.

“We needed those things.”

I looked at her.

“We?”

She immediately stopped talking.

I stepped closer.

“I didn’t send you money so my wife could sleep in a storage shed while you and your daughter lived like queens.”

Lucy covered her mouth.

She was crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silently.

The kind of crying someone does after they have been hurt for so long that they no longer expect anyone to save them.

I hated myself for not knowing.

For four years, I had believed my wife was happy.

I believed every forced smile.

Every short phone call.

Every “I’m okay.”

I believed them because I loved her.

And they used that love against me.

Theresa suddenly changed her expression.

The anger disappeared.

The victim appeared.

“Nathan, you’re misunderstanding everything.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“For the first time in four years, I understand everything.”

She stepped closer.

“You were gone. You weren’t here. You don’t know what it was like.”

I looked at Lucy.

“My wife had cancer.”

Nobody spoke.

“She was losing weight.”

Silence.
