“What?”
“I wanted to help.”
Jillian looked at me.
“Sarah, this is incredibly generous, but these chairs are expensive.”
I placed a hand on Julian’s shoulder.
“He arranged the purchase himself.”
“How?”
Julian looked at his sneakers.
“I sold my guitar.”
Maya’s mouth fell open.
“Your Fender?”
He nodded.
“The one you’ve wanted forever?”
“Yeah.”
“But Julian, you love that guitar!”
He gave a small shrug.
“I can still love music without owning that particular guitar.”
Maya looked from the box to her friend.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You really did that for me?”
Julian smiled.
“I just wanted you to have a chair that works properly.”
Jillian covered her mouth.
For a moment, she couldn’t speak.
Then she embraced Julian.
“That is one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for our family.”
We spent the next hour helping Maya become familiar with her new wheelchair.
Her parents checked the fit and adjustments, and Maya practiced moving around the living room.
