My thirteen-year-old son sold his prized electric guitar to buy a specialized wheelchair for a girl in his class… but early the next morning, two armed police officers showed up at our front door. And what they revealed left me completely paralyzed.

A community group also began discussing ways to help families obtain mobility equipment without facing overwhelming financial costs.

One act of kindness had inspired another.

And another.

And another.

That evening, Julian returned to his bedroom and carefully placed his new Gibson on a guitar stand.

He stood looking at it for several minutes.

I leaned against the doorway.

“Happy?”

He turned and smiled.

“Really happy.”

“Do you miss your Fender?”

“A little.”

He brushed his fingers across the strings.

“But I think this one has a better story.”

I laughed softly.

“You’re probably right.”

Then he looked at me.

“Mom, can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“If I hadn’t sold my guitar, would you have helped Maya?”

I considered his question carefully.

“Of course.”

“Even though the chair was expensive?”

“We would have found a way to try.”

He nodded.

“I guess I should’ve told you.”

“Yes, sweetheart. You should have.”

I walked over and hugged him.
