“Debra?”
“Yes?”
“My name is Rachel.”
She looked straight into my eyes.
“I’m pregnant with Tyler’s son.”
For a moment, I didn’t understand what she’d said.
Then the words settled.
Tyler.
My husband.
A baby.
I gripped the edge of the door.
“Excuse me?”
Rachel continued.
“Tyler and I have been together for almost a year.”
I stared at her.
She didn’t look embarrassed.
If anything, she seemed impatient.
“I know this is difficult,” she added, “but I think everyone deserves honesty.”
“Honesty,” I repeated.
She nodded.
“Tyler and I have already discussed what makes sense for the future.”
I swallowed.
“And what exactly have you decided?”
She gestured toward the house.
“Well, the baby will need a proper home. A yard. Enough bedrooms. Somewhere stable.”
I looked at her in disbelief.
“And?”
“You’re alone here most of the time anyway, aren’t you? Your children are away at college.”
I felt my hands turn cold.
