Then Vanessa handed Eliam the blue folder.
He opened it.
He looked at the first page.
And his entire expression changed.
He looked frightened.
Not embarrassed.
Not guilty in the way a man might look when caught having an affair.
Frightened.
He quickly closed the folder and glanced around the parking lot, as if he were afraid someone might be watching.
Then he said something to Vanessa.
She shook her head.
A moment later, she began crying.
That was when I reached for my phone.
I wanted to call her.
I wanted to demand an explanation.
But before I could press her number, Eliam pulled Vanessa into a brief embrace.
She buried her face against his shoulder.
He whispered something into her ear.
Then they separated, and he walked toward his car.
Vanessa remained beside the building, wiping her eyes.
I watched my husband drive away.
Then I looked at my sister.
And I made a decision that would change everything.
