Part 2
The restaurant had fallen into silence.
Claire was still holding Rose's hand, as if she was afraid that if she let go, she would disappear from her life again.
Evelyn watched without speaking.
Two truths clashed within her.
One said that Rose had loved her daughter without ever asking for anything.
The other reminded her that her husband had hidden such a large part of their life from her for twenty whole years.
Suddenly Claire broke the silence.
"I want to know everything."
Rose hesitated.
"There's not much to say..."
"There are twenty years that I don't know," Claire replied.
"And I want to hear it from you."
Rose took a deep breath.
"After your adoption, not a week went by without me thinking about what you were like."
She took a small box out of her bag.
It was worn out by time.
He opened it slowly.
Inside were dozens of small objects.
A newborn bracelet.
A card from the intensive care unit.
A tiny knitted hat.
And dozens of photos.
Claire began to look at them one by one.
"These... are me."
Rose smiled.
"The nurses pulled them before you left."
Claire held up a photo of herself in the incubator.
On the back it read:
“Today you opened your eyes for the first time.”
In the next one:
“Today you took ten grams.”
In the third:
“Today you smiled in your sleep.”
Claire couldn't hold back her tears.
"You kept all this... for me?"
Rose nodded.
"I knew I might never see you again."
Richard lowered his head.
"And I knew that someday I had to show you."
Evelyn looked at him.
"But you didn't."
He didn't answer.
Because there was no excuse.
Claire turned to her mother.
"Mom… are you angry with her?"
Evelyn stood up from her seat.
Approach Rose.
She stood up too, almost ready to apologize.
Instead of that...
Evelyn hugged her.
Rose froze.
"Thank you..." Evelyn whispered.
"Why did you keep her hope alive when no one else was there?"
Rose burst into tears.
"I never wanted to take anything from you..."
"I know."
Evelyn smiled through her tears.
"But there is someone who still needs to apologize."
All eyes turned to Richard.
He understood that, no matter how beautiful the truth that was revealed was...
His own lie was just beginning to demand its due.
