My Ex Called Our Newborn “My Problem”—Then His Own Mother Finally Made Him Face the Consequences

“Because the solution to Eric refusing responsibility cannot be another woman carrying everything forever.”

For the first time, I understood what Barbara was trying to do.

She wasn’t replacing Eric.

She was helping me stand long enough to stop depending on him voluntarily.

Back at my apartment, she opened a notebook.

“Money removed from the savings account?”

“Yes.”

“Joint bills?”

“Yes.”

“Property he took when he left?”

“Some furniture.”

“Medical expenses for Chloe?”

“Yes.”

I hesitated.

“He keeps saying most of the savings were his because he earned more.”

Barbara pushed the notebook toward me.

“Then paperwork can determine what’s his.”

So I wrote.

Every date I could remember.

Every amount.

Every bill.

Every message.

Every screenshot.

Every promise.

Every refusal.

Afterward, Barbara drove me to a family-law office.

I stopped outside.

“I can’t afford an attorney.”

“The consultation has already been handled.”

“Barbara—”

She raised a hand.

“I’m opening the door, Claire. What you do after that is your responsibility.”

And that was exactly what I did.

I stopped calling Eric for sympathy.

Stopped asking him to understand.

Stopped trying to convince him that Chloe deserved a father.

Instead, I collected records.

Bank statements.

Texts.

Receipts.

Medical bills.

My lawyer dealt with the rest.

Two weeks later, formal paperwork concerning Chloe and our finances reached Eric.

His first text arrived almost immediately.

You’ve completely lost your mind.

I forwarded it to my lawyer.

Then another.

My mother has poisoned you against me.

I forwarded that one too.

For once, Eric’s anger wasn’t something I needed to manage.

There were procedures now.

Dates.

Documents.

Obligations.

Facts.

A few days later, Barbara called.

“Tessa knows.”

“Knows what?”

Barbara paused.

“Apparently quite a lot.”

Later, when Eric called her, I could hear Tessa yelling in the background.

“You told me Claire left you!”

Eric answered too quietly for me to understand.

Then Tessa shouted again.

“You told me this house belonged to you! You told me Claire had plenty of money! You said the baby didn’t need anything!”

Barbara moved the phone away from her ear.

“I suspect your husband is not enjoying his evening.”

Despite myself, I smiled.

Not because I wanted Tessa hurt.

I didn’t.

I smiled because Eric had created so many different versions of the truth that they were finally crashing into one another.

Part 7 — Consequences Aren’t the Same as Revenge
One evening, Barbara visited while Chloe slept nearby.
