Then he mentioned the screenshots.
When it was over, I stood there.
– You're right about the garage.
Vanessa's head felt better.
I continued.
“It was not properly approved for commercial use.”
The room became quiet.
“That was our mistake.”
I looked around.
“I stopped baking there. I refunded the customers I couldn’t serve. I rented a licensed kitchen. We’ve already started the proper approval process.”
Then I looked directly at Vanessa.
"So there's nothing left to negotiate with."
Her face changed.
“This isn’t about the bakery.”
– ?
No?
"It's about your husband guiding me."
I sat down.
Irvin stood up.
“She’s also right, in part because of me.”
For a second, Vanessa seemed triumphant.
Irvin continued.
“I should have set limits earlier.”
Her smile grew.
“I continued to help her after I found out she was flirting.”
Then he looked around the room.
“That was my mistake.”
Vanessa almost seemed relieved.
“But being slow to set a boundary is not the same as reciprocating someone’s interest.”
He plugged in his phone.
He showed the complete conversations.
The courtroom read the messages that Vanessa had shared.
Then the lost answers.
"You'll find one. I already have the woman I want."
“Claire is my wife.”
The room became very quiet.
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Good".
Her voice broke.
“But Claire still humiliated me in public.”
- I did it.
She blinked.
- That?
“I have humiliated you.”
She seemed confused.
"So why are you here?"
"If you're not going to apologize?"
"Because you wanted everything discussed publicly."
I held his gaze.
“So we’re discussing everything publicly.”
He looked around the room.
“I can still report the bakery.”
“It’s already closed.”
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"Until the garage is approved."
And so, he had nothing left.
No secret.
Without leverage.
There is no threat.
The meeting continued.
Nobody applauded.
Nobody needed to do it.
The silence was heavier than the applause.
The neighbors who had defended Vanessa stopped doing so.
People simply turned to the next item on the agenda.
Vanessa gathered her things and left alone.
The months that followed were not magically easy.
The temporary kitchen cost a fortune.
Some customers never returned.
The approval process took longer than expected.
But in the end, the garage passed the inspection.
The morning I turned the ovens back on
At five o'clock sharp, Irvin stood in the doorway with two cups of coffee.
