The photograph from that terrifying night now hangs in my living room.
Every time I look at him, he reminds me how close I came to letting fear destroy something precious.
I went to the hospital terrified, convinced that my father had hidden something terrible from me. But I discovered that what he was really hiding was his own fear of losing his memories before we could create many more together.
And now, every time I go to visit him, I utter the words that neither of us wants to leave unsaid again.
—I love you, Dad.
And he always replies:
—I love you too, darling. Much more than you could ever imagine.
