I’m 74 years old, and my name is Margaret. After my husband died, I moved in with my son, Michael, and his wife, Rebecca.

I remembered how she preparedmy favorite breakfast every morning.

And I remembered those moments when she looked so exhausted that she could barely find the strength to smile.

I took her hand.

“Rebecca, you were trying to protect me, but you made a mistake by hiding the truth from me. I had the right to know what was happening to me.”

She wrapped her arms around me and began to cry.

The next day, all three of us went to the doctor. My treatment and nighttime care plan were reviewed, and Michael promised that

he would never again allow the entire responsibility to fall solely on his wife’s shoulders.

Now, I finally understand why my daughter-in-law was so worried about me every night.

But the most important lesson was something entirely different.

Sometimes, the very people we believe we cannot trust are the ones who care about us the most.

However, even the greatest love cannot justify keeping secrets.
