I became a surrogate for my twin brother—but when he held his newborn daughter for the first time, his face went pale, and he whispered, “I can’t take her home.” Then he told us to look at her back… and the truth that came out days later left me shaking

Later, I would replay that silence in my head again and again.

Part 3 — “I Can’t Take Her Home”

Labor was exhausting.

By the final push, I was gripping Nurse Bianca’s hand so tightly that I apologized between contractions.

“One more,” she encouraged me. “You’re almost there.”

I pushed.

And suddenly the room filled with crying.

The baby’s crying.

My niece’s crying.

Relief washed through me so powerfully that I began laughing and crying at the same time.

When the nurse placed her against my chest, I looked toward Ryan.

“Go meet your daughter,” I told him.

The nurse wrapped the baby carefully and handed her to him.

For months, I had imagined that moment.

I imagined Ryan crying.

I imagined Melissa wrapping her arms around both of them.

I imagined my brother looking at his daughter the way I had looked at Gabriel the first time I held him.

Instead, Ryan became completely still.

He stared down at the baby.
