Then Rachel held out the little girl to her.
“This is Emily. I want her to grow up knowing about the woman whose daughter gave us this chance.”
Linda took the baby into her arms.
The little girl reached out, touched Linda’s cheek, and smiled.
And in that moment, I watched genuine happiness appear on the face of a woman who seemed to have forgotten how to feel joy for so many years.
Three months later, Linda sent me a photograph.
She was sitting on a park bench, with Rachel and little Emily beside her.
Beneath the photograph, she had written:
“Mary, do you remember our argument on the airplane? Since that day, I’ve started taking better care of myself. Now I go for walks every day, meet people, and no longer hide from the world. You reminded me that I can still change.”
I replied:
“And you reminded me that sometimes, behind a person we dislike at first sight, there’s an entire untold life story.”
