“Not always.”
“What did you break?”
He reached into his jacket and removed another folded paper.
“Rosie told me never to show you this unless she woke up.”
I almost laughed.
“That promise lasted well.”
“I’m done keeping secrets that put you in danger.”
The page was a copy of a birth certificate.
My name was typed at the top.
Claire Elise Vale.
Mother: Laura Margaret Vale.
Father: Samuel Thomas Vale.
I stared at it.
“Laura Vale was the woman in the car.”
“Yes.”
“Then my biological mother died that night.”
Ben nodded.
My body went numb.
All day I had mourned Evelyn again. I had imagined her alive somewhere, waiting to be found.
But Evelyn was Rosie’s mother.
Laura Vale was mine.
And my father—or the man I called my father—had buried Laura beneath Evelyn’s name.
“Why did they raise me?”
Ben unfolded a second page.
It was a letter written by Evelyn.
Richard, Samuel is becoming dangerous. Laura wants to leave him, but he has threatened to take Claire. If anything happens, we protect the child. No matter whose blood she carries, she is ours.
