It turned out Ben was developing an inflammatory condition around one of his joints.
Because it had been noticed so early, the doctors believed it could be managed and treated before it became much more serious.
I looked at my father.
He wouldn’t raise his eyes.
The doctor continued.
“The home remedy was not appropriate. But his grandfather noticed a pattern in the child’s behavior and walking that many people would have dismissed as simple tiredness.”
My eyes filled with tears.
We were
quiet for most of the drive home.
Finally, Dad said,
“I should have told you the first day.”
“Yes.”
“And I should never have put anything on his skin.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked into the back seat.
Ben was asleep.
Then I turned back to my father.
“Keep the notebook.”
He looked at me in surprise.
“What?”
“The notebook. Keep noticing things.”
I gave him a small smile.
“But from now on, you only observe and tell me.”
