Eight years after my ex-husband abandoned me for being pregnant, he invited me to Christmas

And she thought about that and said: “Good.”

And then, about four seconds later, because she is eight and because she is better at

this than I am: “No. Not good. I don’t know.”

And then she asked whether we could go in a car next time, because the helicopter was loud and Mirren was sick and you cannot see anything out of the windows when it is dark.

And so that is what we do.

It is a four-hour drive to Thornedge. We have done it eleven times this year. We stop at the same place on the way up and Linus has the same thing every time.

And the thing I would like on the record, at the end of all of it, is that the four of them have met their father and their grandmother and their grandfather, and none of them has ever once mentioned the lawn, or the matching coats, or the eleven seconds.
