I smiled.
“More than anything in the world.”
The little girl took my hand.
“I’d really like to have a mommy, too.”
Something changed inside me that evening.
Michael and I eventually began the adoption process. Many months passed, filled with meetings, assessments, paperwork, and waiting.
Almost two years later, Lily officially became our daughter.
That evening, Michael tucked her into bed, pulled the blanket over her shoulders, and kissed her forehead.
When he came out of her bedroom, he took my hand.
“Sarah, do you remember what we used to say every night?”
I nodded.
“We don’t have to say it anymore,” he whispered.
Just then, we heard Lily’s little voice coming from her bedroom.
“Mommy! Daddy! Goodnight! I love you both!”
I wrapped my arms around my husband and began crying.
For eighteen years, I’d waited for someone to call me Mommy.
And because of that little girl, I finally understood that giving birth isn’t the only way to become a mother.
