At 19, My Best Friend And I Made A Promise About Turning 60 — Then My Landline Rang

Mine spent two hours telling me about his father’s paving business and never once asked me a single question. Not one.

Jeffrey’s date left before the food came because they got into an argument about a movie neither of them had actually seen.

We ended up at the old high school football field around eleven. The gate was chained but the fence had that gap everybody knew about, and we climbed under the bleachers and sat on the grass in the dark.

Jeffrey leaned back against one of the metal supports.

“We’re bad at this.”

“Dating?”

“Choosing people. We’re objectively bad at choosing people.”

I laughed so hard I had to lie back in the grass.

Then He Got Quiet
He was quiet for a while. Long enough that I sat back up.

“What if we never get it right?” he said.

“We’ll survive.”

“No — I’m serious. What if we’re both just single forever?”
