—Why are you telling me this now?
Susan hesitated.
—Because I'm getting married next month. My fiancé knows everything and told me I had to tell you before our wedding.
I couldn't believe it.
He wasn't confessing because he cared about my pain.
She did it because she wanted to start her new marriage without feeling guilty.
I picked up my phone and looked at our last photograph on the beach.
So I deleted it.
"You were right, Susan," I whispered. "That really was our last photograph together."
He tried to take my hand, but I pulled away.
—Please don't throw away forty-two years of friendship.
I looked her straight in the eyes.
—You threw them away eleven years ago.
I left the hotel room without looking back.
That night, Susan sent me seventeen messages.
I didn't answer a single one.
For forty-two years I had believed she was my sister.
But sometimes the people who smile next to us in photographs are precisely the ones who hide the deepest betrayals.
