I called Ben, Mark’s oldest fishing friend. He admitted Mark had told their friends that we were separated and preparing for divorce.
But Mark had slept beside me the night after his second wedding.
When I confronted him with the photographs and messages, his face went pale.
“It wasn’t a real wedding,” he insisted. “We didn’t file anything.”
“Did Claire know your wife was alive?”
He couldn’t answer.
He claimed our marriage hadn’t been good for a while and said he never meant to hurt me.
“You told her I died 12 years ago,” I replied. “Was that easier than telling her the truth?”
He had no answer.
I told him to pack a bag and leave. That week, he moved into a rented apartment, while Claire ended their relationship.
I contacted a divorce attorney and gathered our financial records and evidence. The divorce took months, but eventually we sold the house and divided our assets.
