Mother Caridad’s first instinct was disbelief.
Sister Beatriz was dependable, reserved, and deeply devoted to the convent. She kept the accounts when Caridad was ill. She knew every lock, every cupboard, every visitor.
But trust, Mother Caridad had learned, could not replace questions.
Elena reached across the table but stopped before touching Esperanza’s hand.
“I did not know you were pregnant again until Doctor Serrano told me yesterday.”
Esperanza looked at her.
“Do you want the children?”
Elena’s expression broke—not dramatically, but quietly, as though the question had touched an old bruise.
“I wanted a child once.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No,” Elena said. “I do not want to take Tomás or Miguel from you.”
Esperanza’s shoulders lowered slightly.
Elena continued.
“I would like to know them someday, if that is good for them and acceptable to you. But not as their mother.”
“What as?”
Elena gave a small, uncertain smile.
“As their aunt.”
The word filled the space between them.
Esperanza looked at her sister for a long time.
“You would accept that?”
“I would be grateful for it.”
A tear slipped down Elena’s cheek.
“I spent years believing I had lost the chance to be your sister. I will not lose it again by demanding a place that is not mine.”
Esperanza looked down at the white stone in her palm.
Tomás had given it to her so she would come back.
She thought of Lucía feeding Miguel pear at the kitchen table. Of Mother Caridad sitting beside her after each impossible announcement. Of Elena writing letter after letter into silence.
Family, she realized, was not one claim.
It was a series of choices.
Some made badly.
Some made too late.
Some still waiting to be made well.
Esperanza placed the stone on the table between them.
“My son gave me this.”
Elena looked at it.
“He has good taste.”
“He says unusual things are important.”
Elena smiled through tears.
“He may be right.”
