Griffin apologized properly the following week, once we’d both had time to process everything without the raw shock of that first day still clouding every sentence.
« I should have told you the moment I found out, » he said. « I let three weeks of fear convince me that deciding for you was somehow kinder than trusting you with the truth. »
⸻
« It wasn’t kinder, » I said. « It was lonelier. For both of us, honestly, even if you were the only one who knew it at the time. »

It’s been eight months now since that day in the hospital parking garage. Griffin attends every screening appointment with a considerably steadier presence than the fear that nearly ended our marriage before it ever needed to. I still work some night shifts, though we’ve adjusted our finances enough that I don’t need to carry quite as many as I did during active treatment.
⸻
We started a small tradition after that first honest conversation — a single question we ask each other every Sunday evening, no matter how ordinary or difficult the week has been: What decision do we need to make together this week, instead of alone?

I think about that parking garage often, the exact moment I understood that eleven years of marriage, and fourteen brutal months of fighting side by side through something that nearly killed him, had almost been erased in a single afternoon by a man trying so hard to protect me that he forgot to actually ask what I wanted protected in the first place.
