I woke up from a coma and heard my son whisper, “Don’t open your eyes, Mom… Dad is waiting for you to die.” In that instant, I understood that my accident hadn’t been an accident, and that my husband and my own sister were waiting for me to die so they could take everything.

—She also said that everyone would think Mom was tired. And that later they would take me to Querétaro so I would stop asking questions.

Sergio moved towards him.

—Come here right now.

"Don't touch it," Gálvez ordered.

The door opened again and two police officers from the Prosecutor's Office entered.

"Mrs. Renata, take your hand out of the bag," one of them said.

Renata smiled crookedly.

—Now are you going to believe a scared child?

"Let's believe the recording," Gálvez replied.

Sergio glared at her with hatred.

—What recording?

—Since I entered this room, everything has been recorded.

Renata took her hand out of the bag.

Something metallic glittered between his fingers.

A small scalpel.

Matthew stepped back.

Valeria wanted to scream. She wanted to get up. She wanted to pull her son away from there.

But his body only managed to move his hand again.

Mateo felt the movement.

—My mom moved!

Renata saw it too.

And his expression changed.

It wasn't fear anymore.

It was desperation.

"If he wakes up, we're all lost," he said.

Suddenly she pushed one of the police officers, grabbed Mateo by the arm and put him in front of her as a shield.

—Nobody is going to take away what belongs to me!

Sergio stepped back, pale.

—Renata, let it go.

She burst into hysterical laughter.

—Now you're scared? You cut the brakes!

"Because you told me how to do it!" Sergio shouted.

The truth exploded in front of everyone.

Valeria, trapped in her bed, understood that her enemies were not arguing.

They were sinking among themselves.

And just as Renata raised the scalpel near Mateo's neck, Valeria opened her eyes.

PART 3

The white light of the hospital burned his pupils.

Everything was blurry.

The walls.

The faces.

The shadows suddenly moving.

But Valeria saw the only thing she needed to see.

Matthew was alive.
